Basket weaving is the process of weaving pliable materials into two or three dimensional artefacts. Basketry is made from a variety of flexible materials. There are four main types: Coiled basketry which uses grasses and rushes; plaiting basketry using wide materials like palm or flax; Twining using roots and bark and Wicker or Splint basketry which uses reeds or canes.
Basket weaving is as old as the history of mankind. Today, this ancient craft is a wonderful hobby and leisure activity. Anything pliable can be used in basketry - grasses, Yucca, Willow and Oak or even newspaper can be used to design and create beautiful natural pieces as gifts or for your home.
