Glasswork is the manufacture of functional and decorative glassware. There are many types of glasswork. Glass blowing uses air blown into a pipe and special tools to shape molten glass. In lamp work, glass is manipulated by a torch to create precision instruments. When the piece is finished it can be decorated using cold work techniques.
Glass is both strong and fragile, beautiful and functional. Glass art sculpture dates back thousands of years and ancient pieces have been found, still intact - stained glass survives centuries. Modern day glass art uses many of the same techniques of this ancient craft. Hot Work is done in a kiln, furnace or flame. Cold Work comes afterwards and uses a variety of techniques, including sandblasting, cutting, grinding, polishing, etching and engraving to create a unique piece.
