Swing Dance is a group of dances that developed with jazz music in the 1920s-1940s. Also known as Jitterbug, the majority of swing dances began in African American communities. There were hundreds of styles of swing dancing, but those that have survived include the Lindy Hop, Balboa and the Charleston. Swing Dancing is often extended to include other dances such as West Coast Swing, East Coast Swing, Modern Jive, Ceroc, Boogie Woogie and other dances which developed after the 1940s.
Swing era band leader, Cab Calloway, named these dances because, as he put it 'the dancers look like a bunch of jitterbugs out there on the floor'. Swing dancing means different things to different people but it means fun and high energy to everyone. There are plenty of beginners classes and you might find you're pretty quickly hooked - It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing!
