Tejano music is folk music originating among the Mexican-American populations of Central and Southern Texas. Although it has influences from Mexico and other Latin American countries, the main influences are American. Tejano or Tex Mex music has three major types: Conjunto, Orchestra and Modern or Progressive. A Conjunto band is composed of accordion, bajo sexto, bass and drum. An Orchestra consists of bass, drum, electric guitar, synthesizer and a brass section on which it relies heavily for its sound.
Tejano in Spanish simply means Texan. Tejano music encompasses several genres as well as a whole industry that sustains thousands of musicians, independent record labels, a vibrant club and dance scene, radio programs and stations, festivals and a loyal fan base of local people. It has a growing following of national and international music lovers.
