Blues originated in African-American communities of the USA at the end of the 19th century. The genre developed from traditional African music combined with European American folk music. Blues incorporated spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts, chants and rhymed simple narrative ballads. The blues form - ubiquitous in jazz, rhythm and blues and rock and roll - is characterized by the call-and-response pattern, the blues scale and specific chord progressions, of which the twelve-bar blues is the most common.
Whether you like classic Delta or smooth Contemporary, there's a Blues sub-genre for you. Acoustic and slide guitars or Electric guitars and harmonicas - the Blues scene is alive and well at gigs and festivals all over the world.
