Classical music is regarded as being rooted in European 18th and 19th century music. The Classical Period is often thought of as music from 1750 to 1820 but takes in forms from the 11th century to the present day. The Early Music period includes the Medieval and the Renaissance eras, while the Common practice period includes Baroque and Romantic. Classical music is often defined as having specific rules and played on certain instruments, however as with any art form there are plenty of exceptions.
Classical music covers an enormous variety of music, from the very traditional Chamber Orchestra to the experimental Avant-garde; from the instrumental to the choral and the drama of the Opera. If you're new to Classical, just dive in - there are loads of beginners guides out there - you're bound to find something you like in this enormously wide genre of music.
