Jazz is music originating in African American communities of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Jazz makes heavy use of improvisation, American popular music, the brass band tradition and African musical elements; common instruments are the saxophone, trumpet, piano, double bass, and drums. Although the foundation of jazz is deeply rooted in the African American experience, different cultures have contributed their own experience and styles.
Jazz is one of America's original art forms - it spans a century of innovation and is still going strong. From Dixieland in the 1920's, 1930's Swing and the Big Bands and Bebop of the 1940's, through to the Avant Garde and Fusion of the 1960's and 70's, Acid Jazz of the 80's, the contemporary Jazz of the 1990s and all the way bang up-to-date - however you like your jazz, there's something here for you!
