Rhythm and blues is a genre of popular African-American music that originated in the 1940s. Also known as RnB, the meaning of this term has been through several shifts. In the 1950s it was applied to Blues records but, after Rock and Roll appeared, referred to Electric Blues, as well as Gospel and Soul. In the 1960s, several British rock bands were promoted as RnB and, by the 1970s, it was a blanket term for Soul and Funk. In the 1980s, Contemporary RnB emerged, which combines elements of Soul, Funk, Pop, Hip Hop and Disco.
Contemporary RnB is a style with a slick modern sound we all love. But, with a legacy going back to the 1940s, it has an impressive history. When Disco died, 1980s producers added electronic elements to the black music sound to create a smoother dancefloor-friendly sound. In the 1990s, Neo Soul added soul influences to a Hip Hop blend and now, as RnB incorporates music technology, it looks set to keep going strong for a whole new generation.
