Chess is a two-player board game played on a chequered game board (chessboard). Each player begins with sixteen pieces of six types, each of which can move differently. The most powerful piece is the queen and the least powerful, the pawn. A player's pieces are used to attack and capture the opponent's pieces, while protecting their own. The objective is to 'checkmate' the opponent's king by making its capture inescapable.
Chess is a great mind game which develops your mental abilities of concentration, abstract reasoning and problem solving. Play it socially with friends or competitively with a local club - chess is a fun and challenging hobby. Chess has been played for more than two thousand years and doesn't look like giving up anytime soon - its the world's most popular board game.
