Auto racing is the sport of racing cars for competition. The aim in track racing is to set the fastest time in a number of laps or time limit. There are numerous different categories, each with different rules. The best-known variety of single-seater racing is Formula One, followed by GP2. Super Formula is the Japanese Formula One while Formula E is for one-make, single-seat, electrically powered cars. Rallying takes place on public or private roads with specially built road legal cars. Rallies may be won by speed or by driving to an ideal time.
Everyone loves the glamour of Formula 1 but, while you're unlikely to hop straight into an F1 car, there are many other ways to get into motor sport. Rallying is popular - ordinary cars in competition against the clock on roads rather than on a track. Stock car racing is similar, with unmodified cars racing on a track. There are lots of amateur racing clubs. If you've got petrol in your veins, join up!
