Fencing is the sport of fighting with swords known as an épée, foil or sabre. There are three weapons in fencing each with its own rules. The foil and épée are light thrusting weapons. The foil may target the torso, neck and groin, whereas the heavier épée may target the entire body. The sabre is a light cutting and thrusting weapon that targets the entire body above the waist. Techniques such as the attack, riposte, feint and lunge are used offensively while others, such as the parry, are used defensively.
Fencing developed from an ancient form of combat and is one of only four sports to have featured at every modern Olympics. Fencing is great for all-round fitness, muscle toning, building core strength, coordination and balance and people of all ages can compete in the sport. After the Olympic Games of 1924, the Italian and Hungarian teams settled a scoring controversy with a real-life duel!
