Kitesurfing uses a power kite to propel the surfer across the water on a board. Also known as kiteboarding, this is an extreme surface water sport that combines aspects of wakeboarding, snowboarding, windsurfing, surfing, paragliding, skateboarding and gymnastics. There are several styles - freestyle is mostly used for competitive events and involves using the board and kite to gain height that enables the kitesurfer to perform jumps and other tricks. Course Race Events are similar to yacht racing and test both speed and tactics.
Kitesurfing is a great excuse to travel to exotic windy locations and anyone who's reasonably fit can do it - technique is more important than strength. Getting going on the board for the first time is an unforgettable experience but, once you've done it, there's a wide range of skills to master. There's almost no waiting around with this adrenaline fuelled sport - whenever there's wind, you can be kitesurfing.
