Windsurfing is a water sport in which the surfer rides a wind powered sail board. Windsurfing combines elements of surfing and sailing. The rig is connected to the board by a free-rotating universal joint and consists of a mast, 2-sided boom and sail. Windsurfers may surf as a leisure pursuit or competitively. Freestyle is a timed event judged on creativity, difficulty and number of tricks whereas Slalom is a high speed racing competition.
Windsurfing combines the laid back culture of surfing with the discipline and rules of sailing. For beginners, low-wind freestyle tricks are a great place to start - learn to sail backwards with the fin out of the water, or go from a sailing stance to sitting on the board while continuing to sail. Most people think of windsurfing as something you do for fun but its now a recognised Olympic sport.
