Water sports happen in, on or around water, such as the ocean or freshwater lakes, streams and ponds, or man-made pools. They can be competitive or non-competitive, and carried out individually or in groups and teams. Water sports occur both on, in and underneath the water surface. Many include boats, such as sailing, kayaking and canoeing, enabling you to travel across long distances, taking in beautiful landscapes and exploring new places. Others involve swimming and scuba diving, allowing you to plunge beneath the water surface and explore what lies beneath. Other activities bear close resemblance to land sports, such as water polo, a ball-sport with an aquatic twist, or synchronised swimming, a form of water-based dance and gymnastics.
Participation in water sports has many benefits. Learning to swim is a basic safety skill, and it's never too late to start. Swimming, a vital skill for all water sports, is also very beneficial to health, allowing you to build strength and fitness without exerting too much pressure on your joints. Water activities can also be an especially good source of exercise for those with certain physical disabilities as it is non weight bearing. Swimming classes are available for all ability levels.
