Winter sports originate from cold climates. They are diverse in their rules and equipment, but are all performed on snow or ice. Particularly popular winter sports are skiing, snowboarding and ice skating, often associated with the European festive season. More obscure sports include activities such as bobsledding and curling. Although winter sports typically occur out of doors and during the winter season, many are popular in warmer climates indoors in temperature-controlled buildings, such as indoor ice rinks or dry ski slopes. So you don't need to be in a snowy Alpine village to enjoy winter activities - although it never hurts!
Winter sports are often done in a team or group, for either competitive or non-competitive purposes. Winter team sports, such as ice hockey or ski teams, offer people the chance to enjoy sport with friends new or old, bonding over shared challenges and victories. They also offer great health benefits. Time spent outdoors in the fresh air is brilliant for body and mind, and even if you are doing a sport indoors, the fitness benefits remain. Winter sports outside also allow people the opportunity to appreciate beautiful scenery, such as snow-covered mountains, glaciers and frozen lakes.
