Biathlon is a winter sport that combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. This sport originated as training for the Norwegian military; modern biathlon is a civilian variant of the old military combined exercise. The individual race is the oldest biathlon event with sprints, pursuits and mass starts being different versions. Relay teams may be four biathletes of the same sex or two women and two men.
If Biathlon sounds more like military training than sport, it's no surprise because that's where it came from. If you fancy skiing through a beautiful mountain environment with a rifle across your back, you'll need loads of stamina and the precision to hold a gun steady and aim at a tiny target.
